Garden Redesign Maximising Sunlight and Shade with Functional Areas

This garden underwent a complete redesign, transforming a tired, underused space into an area that maximizes its potential, taking advantage of the vastly different light conditions at either end. On one side, a shady woodland area was created beneath mature trees. Reclaimed sleeper-edged paths were incorporated, leading to a tranquil seating area designed to make the most of the cool, shaded environment. Existing planting was reused wherever possible, with additional plants added to enhance the space and complete the woodland feel.

On the opposite end of the garden, the sunny area was revitalised with a porcelain patio, sheltered by a wooden pergola to provide some shade. Drought-tolerant plants were selected to thrive in the full sun, ensuring minimal maintenance. This area leads to a main patio surrounded by vibrant, colorful planting, adding energy and life to the garden.

To maximize the garden’s functionality, two utility areas were introduced. One was designed for bin storage, neatly tucked away, while the other focused on rainwater collection and a space for hanging washing. These additions made the garden both practical and beautiful, improving its usability while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic.
